Ely Cathedral welcomed a huge congregation this morning in support of the eight who were to be ordained deacon by Bishop Stephen, including Nicki Bland to serve in the Kym Valley benefice.
Amongst the congregation were a coach load from Kimbolton and Tilbrook, and a number of others who had made their own way there.
Bishop Stephen presided at the ordination and Eucharist, and there was a part for Bishop David, both Archdeacons and the new Dean of Ely Cathedral who gave the address – having led the ordinands’ retreat leading up to the day. The new Director of Ordinands took the part of liturgical deacon, and read the gospel. The epistle was read by a visiting pastor of the German church with which Ely diocese is linked.
Following the service Nicki’s supporters were all invited back to Kimbolton Castle for a reception and lunch. Despite traffic hold-ups on the A14, which delayed the ‘guest of honour,’ a great time was had by all.
